Asian Earth
The warm relationships in the life of a Hindu family of the Lower Ganges Valley is depicted through two simultaneous cycles of a day and a year. Sequences show the mother bathing in the morning, the father plowing in the springtime, the family building a new home, fertilizing fields and cooking noonday meal. A complete sequence on rice culture is climaxed by an autumn festival. Nature reigns supreme when disaster strikes through a locust invasion, drought and death of the grandfather. At dusk the family offers a prayer from the village promontory. Late in the evening, gathered inside the shelter, the mother reviews their life and contemplates possible solutions. Asian Earth, an all time top award winner, has become a classical film on Asia, resounding with human warmth, and inspiring and perceptive record of humanity.
